Below is a guide detailing and describing the magical creatures of North America. Creatures are divided into three classifications: Beast, Being, and Spirit. Danger categories are given an X-XXXXX rating.
Note: As well as the individual animals indicated here (which are fictional/particular to the setting), there are also common plains and tropical climate animals such as small monkeys, many types of birds and insects, fish in the river and so on.
X
Flobberworm
Classification | Beast
The Flobberworm is a herbivorous, ten-inch, toothless brown worm which eats mainly lettuce and cabbage. It moves very little and prefers to live in damp ditches. The Flobberworm is notable for being one of the few living creatures capable of being Summoned with the Summoning Charm.
XX
Chizpurfle
Classification | Beast
A Chizpurfle is a type of microscopic parasite. Crab-like in appearance, they are up to a twentieth of an inch with fangs. They attack magical objects like wands and cauldrons, gnawing through to the magical core or gorging on the last remnants of potions. In the absence of magic, Chizpurfles attack No-Maj items powered by electricity. This explains the sudden failure of various new electrical goods. Chizpurfle infestations are usually easily handled by patented potions on the market, but more severe outbreaks need to be dealt with by the Pest Sub-Division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.
Clabbert
Classification | Beast
A Clabbert is an arboreal creature that resembles a cross between a monkey and a frog. Its smooth skin is mottled green, and it has short horns and a wide grinning mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. Its long arms and webbed hands and feet allow it to move gracefully through the trees. On the Clabbert's forehead is a large pustule which flashes red when the Clabbert senses danger. It feeds on small lizards and birds. The Clabbert is generally found in the southern states of America. American wizards and witches used to keep Clabberts to give them an early warning about approaching No-Maj. The International Confederation of Wizards were forced to introduce fines to stop this. Despite looking nice at night, a tree full of glowing Clabbert pustules caused curious No-Maj neighbors to wonder why the Wizards still had their Christmas lights up in June.
Fairy
Classification | Beast
The fairy is a vain creature, and will often allow itself to be used as decoration by Wizardkind. Due to their vanity, fairies are almost continually grooming themselves. They possess a weak brand of magic that allows it to evade its predators. The fairy cannot speak; instead, it makes a high-pitched buzzing noise to communicate with its fellow fairies, but they can laugh in a similar way to the playful buzzing of wings.
Ghoul
Classification | Beast
A ghoul is an ugly creature that resembles a slimy, buck-toothed ogre. They tend to live in the attics or barns of wizards and witches. They are relatively harmless creatures and are just seen as nuisances because of the noise they make. They are relatively dimwitted and live off of bugs and other household pests. At most, they will groan and throw objects.
Gnome
Classification | Beast
A gnome, or garden gnome, is a magical creature commonly known to infest the gardens of wizarding households. Gnomes live in burrows underground, known as gnomeholes, where they dig up and eat the roots of plants, creating little heaps of earth around gardens a lot like moles. Gnomes can reach a size of approximately one foot. They are usually brown in color and have disproportionately large heads, making them look like potatoes with legs. Although not dangerous creatures, they possess razor-sharp teeth and tend to bite.
Jobberknoll
Classification | Beast
The Jobberknoll is a small, blue speckled bird that never makes any noise until the moment before it dies. It then lets out a long scream, which consists of every sound it ever heard backwards. Its main food supply is small insects and lives in northern Europe and North America.
Mooncalf
Classification | Beast
The Mooncalf has smooth, pale grey skin, and four spindly legs that end in large flat webbed feet. The Mooncalf also has a very long neck and bulging blue eyes that sit on the top of its head. Once the Mooncalf is in the moonlight, it performs complicated dance moves while standing on its hind legs. It is believed that this is part of the Mooncalf mating ritual, but also has the side effect of creating geometric patterns in wheat fields that confuse No-Maj.
Puffskein
Classification | Beast
A Puffskein is covered in soft fur and spherical in shape. It is a favorite pet found worldwide, that does not object to being cuddled or thrown. The Puffskein is a scavenger, eating anything from leftovers to spiders, but it particularly likes to use its long thin pink tongue to eat wizards' boogers while they sleep. The Puffskein is easy to care for, and they emit a low humming sound when they are content. A group of Puffskeins is referred to as a poffle.
XXX
Ashwinder
Classification | Beast
The Ashwinder is thin and pale-grey with glowing red eyes. They rise from the embers of a dying fire and slither off into a dark corner to lay their eggs, leaving an ashy trail behind. Ashwinders only live for an hour and will collapse to dust when they have laid their eggs. As it is a serpentine creature, the Ashwinder may very well be susceptible to Parseltongue magic.
Bundimun
Classification | Beast
The Bundimun is a greenish, many-eyed pest that feeds on dirt and can destroy a whole house. Their presence is indicated by the foul stench of decay. The secretions of the Bundimun rot building structures, and if a home gets a large enough infestation, it can collapse. Scouring Charms can clear out small infestations, but large colonies should be dealt with by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures (Pest Sub-Division). Bundimuns are known to spit out acid that can seriously harm anyone who bothers it.
Doxy
Classification | Beast
The Doxy is covered in coarse black hair, and has an additional set of arms and legs. Doxies have shiny beetle-like wings, and a double row of sharp venomous teeth. If bitten, a wizard or witch should take an antidote immediately. Doxies bury their eggs underground, and Doxy Queens can lay up to five-hundred at once. The eggs generally hatch in two to three weeks. Doxies are considered pests. They can infest houses, taking up residence in the draperies. Removing them requires a good supply of Doxycide. Alternatively, they can be dispatched with a simple Knockback Jinx, as doxies are particularly vulnerable to it, excluding the queens, which are more resistant.
Hodag
Classification | Beast
The Hodag is a horned, frog-headed creature with glowing, red eyes. It is also roughly the size of a large dog. They tend to be drawn to No-Maj farms, and MACUSA's Department of No-Maj Misinformation works hard to cover up sightings.
Jackalope
Classification | Beast
The magical creatures found generally seem to have ram-like horns as opposed to antlers, but antlered specimens have been found, as well as coming in a wide variety of colorations. Just how closely related Jackalopes are too mundane rabbits is highly debated, given their often quite noticeable claws, their heightened tendencies towards violence, and their attitudes in general. Jackalopes breed on much the same cycle as mundane rabbits and produce large litters. However their tendencies towards violence and daring kill off large numbers of the creatures, rapidly, which, added to the number of them hunted to death by No-Maj before they develop their horns, and the number hunted by various predators (foxes and wolves, predominantly), keep the number from ever growing large.
Jarvey
Classification | Beast
The Jarvey resembles an overgrown ferret and is commonly found in Great Britain, Ireland, and North America. The Jarvey is capable of Human speech, although true conversation with a Jarvey is impossible. The creature uses short, usually rude, statements and phrases in an almost constant stream. Jarveys live below ground, and their diet consists of moles, voles, rats, and gnomes. Jarvey are particularly good at hunting gnomes and are sometimes employed to de-gnome a garden, although their methods are usually brutal.
Knarl
Classification | Beast
The Knarl is a creature that dramatically resembles a hedgehog, so much so that there is only one known (behavioral) difference between them: when food is left out for a hedgehog it will appreciate and enjoy the gift; a knarl will see it as an attempt to lure it into a trap and hence savage the garden of the householder who left the food. No-Maj children have often been blamed for damage committed by a Knarl. Knarls eat wild daisies. Casting a well-aimed Stunning Spell at the Knarl will work well and will not do any permanent harm to the animal.
Kneazle
Classification | Beast
A Kneazle is a magical feline creature related to, and similar in appearance to, a cat. They have spotted, speckled or flecked fur, large ears and a lightly plumed tail, like a lion. They are thought to have separate breeds, like cats, and therefore vary in appearance. They make excellent pets if they like a witch or wizard. They have a very high level of intelligence, are independent and occasionally aggressive, and have an uncanny ability to detect suspicious and distrustful people. They can also safely guide their owners home. Because of their aggression towards certain individuals, Kneazles have a XXX classification by the Ministry of Magic if they are not interbred with another species.
Nogtail
Classification | Beast
The Nogtail is a demon-like creature resembling a stunted piglet, but with narrow black eyes, a thick stubby tail, and long legs. Nogtails sneak into pigsties and suckle on an ordinary pig, which curses the farm. The longer the Nogtail goes undetected, the longer the blight will stay on the farm. Fast and hard to catch, the only way to make sure the Nogtail will not come back is to chase it away with a pure white dog.
Plimpy
Classification | Beast
The Plimpy is a small round fish with two legs ending in webbed feet. It lives in deep lakes and feeds on water snails. The Plimpy is not dangerous but will nibble on the feet and clothing of unsuspecting swimmers. Merpeople consider the Plimpy to be a pest, and they deal with it by tying its legs into a knot and letting it drift away.
Salamander
Classification | Beast
The salamander is a small fire dwelling lizard that feeds on flames. They are born out of flames, specifically called salamander fires, and appear to be blue or red depending on the heat of the flames. They live as long as the flames that spawned them. The salamander can survive outside out of the flames that birthed it for up to six hours if fed on pepper. There also exists a variant species called the Frost Salamander that instead of dwelling in fire is closely associated with ice.
Streeler
Classification | Beast
The Streeler is a giant snail. Streelers have sharp spikes on their shells, which inject venom. This defense is most likely to scare off or kill its attackers, such as birds and small to medium-sized rodents. The Streeler changes color hourly and leaves behind a trail of venom so toxic that it burns all vegetation that it touches.
XXXX
Hidebehind
Classification | Beast
The Hidebehind is a nocturnal, forest-dwelling specter that preys on humanoid creatures. As the name suggests, it can contort itself to hide behind almost any object, concealing itself perfectly from hunters and victims alike. No-Maj have suspected its existence, but they are no match for its powers. Only a witch or wizard is likely to survive an attack by a Hidebehind.
Merpeople
Classification | Beast
Merpeople are sentient beasts that live underwater. They are found all over the world. Their customs and habits are mysterious, and, like the centaurs, were offered the being status but refused in favor of beast, as they didn't want to be placed in status with Hags and Vampires. Merpeople can breathe above the water for a time, but it is unclear if they can ever indeed leave their habitat. Although their exact level of intelligence as compared to humans is unknown, they possess many traits beyond those of mere animals. Merpeople have a developed language, Mermish, and have even created music (which they are known, as a whole, to be fond of). Evidence that the Merpeople have a thriving culture is that they live in highly organized communities, some containing elaborate dwellings made of stone, and have been known to domesticate creatures. Other signs of their intelligence include jewelry and weapon making, production of art (both paintings and statues), and an ability to understand essential communication via gestures.
Re'em
Classification | Beast
The Re'em is extremely rare, resembling giant oxen with a golden hide. Re'em blood gives immense strength to the drinker for a limited time. However, since demand far exceeds supply, and obtaining the blood in the first place is extremely difficult, it can rarely be found on the open market.
Sasquatch
Classification | Beast
The North American Sasquatch is, by current magizoological theories, believed to be a close cousin of the Tibetan Yeti, and known to prowl the forests and national parks of the USA and Canada. Rarely seen - and almost never interacted with - Sasquatches are believed to be of near-human intelligence but are more commonly compared with giants for their, (sometimes considerable) size. Sasquatches, by and large, tend to keep to themselves, and attempts to force interactions never go well. While native wizards have known about the creatures for a long time, and indeed know how to interact with them safely, they refuse to share this information with modern, non-native inhabitants of North America. Sasquatches are known to bury their dead in often isolated sites, which can be identified through the presence of Corpse Roses there. Some of the eldest of these sites can be quite close to places of human habitation, while more recent ones are incredibly isolated. Though the flowers are useful - and sometimes grown purposefully by Sasquatches near-native tribes who have offered some subtle help to them as a gift - theft of the flowers from Sasquatch cemetery and grave sites is likely to cause great displeasure among the creatures, and even native wizards rarely make use of the flowers.
Snallygaster
Classification | Beast
The part-bird, part-reptile is a distant relative of the Occamy. It cannot breathe fire but uses fangs made of serrated steel to slice through its prey. It's naturally curious and has a bulletproof hide.
Thunderbird
Classification | Beast
The Thunderbird is a large, avian creature native to North America, and most commonly found in Arizona in the southwestern United States. The Thunderbird is described as having a head that is similar to that of an eagle; or, in the wizarding world, similar to that of a Hippogriff. They possess six pairs of powerful wings and have feathers that shimmer with cloud-like patterns. The Thunderbird is known to change colors as it summons storms, its iridescent feathers shifting from various shades of gold to electrifying blue, to grey and silver, to white, and even to deep navy. A close relative of the Phoenix, the Thunderbird can create storms as it flies and is highly sensitive to danger.
XXXXX
Basilisk
Classification | Beast
The Basilisk can grow up to fifty feet in length and is a dark green color with large yellow eyes. These eyes have the power to kill anyone who looks into them instantly, but indirect contact will merely render them Petrified. It is also the mortal enemy of spiders, who can intuitively sense them and flee whenever they do. Basilisk skin is armored like that of a dragon's, which deflects spells cast upon it. The Basilisk sheds its skin at intervals, like all other snakes, when it grows. Since the Basilisk is still a serpent, a Parselmouth may place a Basilisk under his or her control. This depends on the relationship between the Basilisk and the Parselmouth.

Dragon
Classification | Beast
Dragons are giant winged, fire-breathing reptilian creatures. Widely regarded as terrifying yet awe-inspiring, they can be found all over the world. Able to fly and breathe fire through their nostrils and mouths, they are one of the most dangerous and hardest to conceal creatures in the wizarding world. Despite how dangerous they are, there are people who are trained to work with them, called dragon keepers, or dragonologists. A wizard who trades and sells dragon eggs (which is an illegal activity) is referred to as a dragon dealer.
Horned Serpent
Classification | Beast
There are several different species of Horned Serpents found worldwide. The most diverse group still in existence is native to North America. Horned Serpents have a horned head, thus why they are named. Certain American species also sport a jewel in the forehead. They are regarded as intelligent, with fierce eyes. These serpents emit a low, musical note to sound danger.
Rougarou
Classification | Beast
The Rougarou stands between seven to eight feet tall, has razor sharp teeth, and glowing red eyes. Rougarou is also speculated by some to be closely related to both Wendigos and Werewolves. Regardless, neither has been proven, through various controlled studies are being done on captured Rougarou, which despite their humanoid form are, are much like Dementors and the more diminutive Imps, Erklings and Red Caps, as they are not fully sapient and thus considered Beasts. The creatures themselves are common in Louisiana, where they occasionally prey on those No-Maj who wander into their paths. More often, however, they hunt whatever animals available to them, although their prodigious body count has led to their reputation as fearsome Dark creatures.
Wampus
Classification | Beast
Somewhat resembling the mundane mountain lion or cougar in size and appearance, the Wampus Cat is native to the Appalachian Mountains. It can walk on its hind legs, outrun arrows, and its yellow eyes are reputed to have the power of both hypnosis and Legilimency. The Wampus cat is fast, strong, and almost impossible to kill.
Werewolf
Classification | Being & Beast
A werewolf is a human being who, upon the complete rising of the full moon, becomes a fearsome and deadly near-wolf. This condition is caused by infection with lycanthropy, also known as werewolfry. Werewolves appear in the form of a wolf but, there are distinctions between them and regular wolves. A mixture of powdered silver and dittany applied to a fresh bite will seal the wound and allow the victim to live on as a werewolf, although tragic tales are told of knowing victims begging for death rather than becoming werewolves. The Wolfsbane Potion, invented by Damocles, allows the werewolf to keep their human mind during transformation. A werewolf cannot choose whether or not to transform and will no longer remember who they are and would kill even their best friend given the opportunity once transformed. Despite this, they can recall everything they have experienced throughout their transformation upon reverting to their human form.
X-XXXXX
Pukwudgie
Classification | Being
A creature found in the forests of North America, the Pukwudgie is humanoid and highly dangerous when angered. Generally, Pukwudgies have a similar stature to Goblins and Dwarves, between two to three feet in height, house-elf-like long ears, hair atop their heads which become hardened quill-like spines down their back and have skin tending from light grey through to dark, a natural degree of variation similar to human melanin pigmentation. Pukwudgies are naturally able to apparate even from a young age, much like House Elves, with magic entirely of their own, again like House Elves, which can allow them to circumvent human Anti-Apparition spells. They are also very capable with their particular brand of magic, able to transform themselves to various degrees to protect themselves and scare off enemies, as well as conjure poisoned arrows and flames at will. Much of the knowledge of Pukwudgies comes from two sources. The first is the Native American Wampanoag tribe, who have a strong history of interaction with the creatures, not always positive, but not always negative either. The other is the Pukwudgies of Ilvermorny school, considered by some of their cousins to be exceptionally odd for their willingness to work with humans. Thus it is, while some Pukwudgies will complainingly provide help to humans, many more will be anything from scornful to outright violent, and it is tough to judge which is which. Generally, except for those attending Ilvermorny who will interact with the Pukwudgies there, most American wizards have learned to take the advice of the Wampanoag, and avoid unnecessary interaction with Pukwudgies which might otherwise seek to do them harm.
Vampire
Classification | Being
A vampire is a magical humanoid that is famed for biting people on the neck and sucking their blood. They are part of the family of beings known as the Living Dead. They are usually pale and gaunt with sharp fangs for puncturing the throat. Vampires have an aversion to garlic and can be kept at bay by its presence.
Winged Horse
Classification | Beast
The Winged Horse is found worldwide, and there are many different breeds, including Abraxan, Aethonan, Granian, and Thestral. Owners of winged horses are required by law to cast Disillusionment Charms on them regularly. Owners may compete in a winged horse race.
