Frequently Asked Questions

Why Mount Greylock?
Mount Greylock is found in the mountains of western Massachusetts, United States. Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry currently occupies the highest peak of the mountain.

Will Mount Greylock provide application checks?
Yes. Mount Greylock allows anyone who is interested to join on the basis that their application is approved by the administrator. Following the application period, applicants will either be accepted or pending. Those pending have been accepted on the grounds that the application requires adjustments. Adjustments are non-negotiable, and acceptance will be declined if there is a failure to meet these changes.

Are activity checks practiced?
No. People lead busy lives, and while role-play is a hobby, real life takes priority. To ease the pressure on role-players, members are safe from being forcibly removed from the group. If at any point a member feels that they can no longer commit to the group, they are free to either permanently leave or leave and rejoin at a later time.

Do I have to participate in plot-related events?
No. It is up to the member how much they choose to engage with plot themes. Rather, you may opt to take a slice-of-life route or simply participate by drawing and writing syllabus tasks. Every character is the protagonist of their own story. Whatever path you choose is up to you!

May members submit ideas?
Mount Greylock is open to suggestions, but there is no guarantee any suggestions will be adopted. Remember, Worldbuilding, Member-Led Clubs, and the Student Bulletin are all facets of the group.

How many times may I substitute a character?
If you can afford it, you may replace a character as many times as you’d like.

How often does Mount Greylock enroll new members?
Mount Greylock is an open public role-playing group. Anyone who is interested is free to join as they please. That said, the potential member's application must first be approved by the administrator before they can be accepted in an official capacity. While new members can begin their journey with up to two characters, please only apply with one!

Does my secondary and tertiary character need to be approved before use?

Yes! While you can essentially join with up to two OCs, all OCs, including a potential tertiary character must be vetted and approved. Minor changes either to the story or overall character design may need to be adopted before acceptance.

How often are submissions approved?
Ideally, submissions are accepted once per week, Sundays, respectively, but depending on the administrator's schedule, the schedule may deviate.

Will currency go to members or characters?
All Dragots flow directly to its members. The member may decide how to distribute currency and items amongst their characters.

Are House Points and the Currency system the same thing?
No. Currency is rewarded through Art & Literary submissions only, whereas House Points are awarded through Syllabus submissions, performing good deeds, winning Quodpot matches, succeeding in duels, etc.

If I submit art or literature as part of a syllabus requirement, will I earn both House Points and Dragots?
Yes. Additionally, House Point deductions won’t negatively affect Dragot totals.

How frequently are House Points updated?
In regards to Syllabus submissions, House Points are totaled once per week, Sundays, respectively, but depending on the administrator's schedule, the schedule may deviate. Spontaneously awarded House Points will be added immediately. Points deducted for rule-breaking will likewise be subtracted forthwith. If you notice a discrepancy, please notify an admin so it may be corrected ASAP.

Can we lose House points? Who deducts them?
Yes. In character, Professors and Resident Assistants (Prefects) may deduct points during events and public role-plays. Please be aware of what you publicly role-play as a mod or RA may slip in to discipline a naughty student(s)! Professors will be run by Admins while RAs will be run by member characters.

Who is the Headmaster?
Ilvermorny does have a Dean (Headmaster) who will not be role-played. Rather, the Dean will act as a background figure mentioned in passing. As far as her name and appearance as concerned, Delilah Greyhand is a fierce elder witch of African American descent.

My character identifies as a gender other than what was assigned at birth. How will that impact where they’ll live and sleep?
Anyone whose identity differs from their sex at birth will be given a choice. In this case, please notify the administration of your preference.

May we request roommates?
Mutual roommate requests will be accommodated. Otherwise, a compatibility form will be administered to determine roommates.

Are roommates divided by year?
No, but they are divided by House.

How many roommates per dorm?
The dorms will consist of three to four students per room.

Can my character(s) have unnaturally colored hair?
Yes! Dyed hair, piercings, and (tasteful) tattoos are all allowed. I only ask that you consider the school setting. Anything that can be deemed as distracting or inappropriate may have professors asking you to rectify your appearance, or merely pointing their wand at you and rectifying it without asking at all!

Can my character(s) use the Patronus Charm?
You may certainly headcanon what your character’s Patronus Charm would be, but dementors are rare in America, and so Patronus spells are less popularly taught at Ilvermorny. Wandless magic is prioritized over Patronus Charms.

Can my character be foreign?
Ilvermorny accepts students from all over North America and its dependent territories. Please refer to the following list of
North American countries for reference. That said, your character can have ancestral ties to any culture and can attend Ilvermorny if their parents are immigrants legally registered with MACUSA’s Department of International Magic.

Can my character(s) be a metamorphmagus/animagus/werewolf/legilimens/half-breed, etc?
Unfortunately, no. In fairness to everyone, these unique abilities/conditions are not available to students.

Can my character be related to or know a canonical character?
Unfortunately, no. While characters like Harry Potter do exist across the pond, Mount Greylock will be attempting to create our world and minimizing the role of canon characters to that of mere historical significance.
